What is Biology?

A level Biology provides the best foundation for a biologically-related degree at university. It is a highly interesting subject that is about the human body and the environment, many of which are highly topical and involve current issues. High A level grades are required to open the door to careers in a variety of areas such as Neuroscience, Pharmacy, Medicine, Optometry, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Farming, the Food and Drinks Industry, Conservation &n Environmental issues.

Biology is the study of living things and how they interact with each other and their environment. The course includes learning about the fundamentals of Biology which act as the foundation that the A2 components are based upon. These include learning comprehensibly about Cell Biology, Membranes, Biochemistry of Molecules and Enzymes. Students then learn about the physiology of a human body including Heart and Circulation, Gas Exchange, Nervous System, Homeostasis, Excretion, Brain and Muscle Contraction. Additionally, students will learn about DNA and inheritance through Genetics, Evolution & Natural Selection, Genetic Engineering and roles of microorganisms as causative agents of disease as well as their use in food industry. A Level Biology also allows the study of the environment through a comprehensive study of Ecology and Influence of Man on the Environment which includes Climate Change and Global Warming. There is a fair bit of mathematics in the current linear syllabus. Biology is a science that is undergoing an incredible and exciting breakthroughs such as the use of stem cells in treatment of disease and the emergence of disciplines such as Proteomics, Genomics and Synthetic Biology.

Biology at Advanced level is hard work, but always fascinating, engaging, rewarding and relevant to you, and above all, this planet, particularly at these COVID-19 times.
